Need a name for a new game account, a Discord server or a fresh social profile? This free nickname generator gives you a list of ideas in one click, ready to copy. Choose how the nicknames are built — From words, Random letters or From your word — and press Generate. The page opens on From words with ten nicknames per click, and Count sets anything from 1 to 50. Platform checks the results against the name format of Minecraft Java, Roblox, Fortnite, Discord, Steam, Xbox, Twitch, Instagram or TikTok and marks every name that passes, and the gear button next to Generate opens Advanced Options, where Letter case, Between words, Add digits, Max length and Leet (l33t) shape the rest. It works as a username generator too: with a platform selected, the names are built and checked against the length and character rules of that platform's usernames or display names.

From words joins two words into a name that reads at a glance, such as SilentFalcon or PixelNinja. Theme picks the vocabulary: Gaming, Fantasy, Cool, Cute, Dark, Funny or Rap, or Any to mix them all. Every theme adds its own words to a shared pool and brings its own patterns: Funny and Cute sometimes put The in front (TheLazyOtter), Rap borrows the stage-name habits of the genre (LilGhost, MCNova, GhostBeatz), and Gaming, Fantasy, Cool and Dark also pair two nouns (PixelWolf). The words are English, whichever language you read this page in. Max length is applied before the words are chosen, not after, so you never get a clipped name like SilentFalc: only pairs that fit are drawn. Starts with limits the first word to the letter you type, so S gives SilentFalcon or SassyLion. Letter case switches between CamelCase, Capitalized, lowercase and UPPERCASE, Between words puts an underscore or a dot between the words (silent_falcon), and Add digits appends two to four digits at the end. A line beneath the result shows how many different names your settings can produce; with the page defaults it is more than 300,000.

Random letters is the classic random nickname: a made-up name built from syllables that sounds as if it could be real, like Norte, Rabol or Juwet. Length sets exactly how many letters it has, from 4 to 12. The generator builds it syllable by syllable from consonants, vowels and short clusters such as br, st or nd, and keeps to a few rules that make it pronounceable: never more than two consonants in a row, even where two syllables meet, no piles of vowels, and doubled letters only where the language uses them. That is what separates a nickname from a password: other people have to be able to read it out and remember it. Starts with works here too, and a name that opens with a consonant is followed by a vowel so it stays easy to say. On the Cyrillic versions of the page, the generator can also write in the language's own alphabet, following its spelling rules.

From your word is for when you already know what the name should be about: your name, a pet's name, a favourite word. Type it into Your word or name and the generator builds variations that keep it recognizable. It pairs it with a word from the chosen theme (AlexStorm, DarkAlex), adds a prefix such as The, Its or Mr or a suffix such as GG, Plays or Pro (ItsAlex, AlexGG), wraps it the gamer way (xXAlexXx), stretches a vowel (Aleex) or shortens a longer word in front of a theme word. Several words, such as a first and last name, are joined into one, so alex storm becomes AlexStorm, and a word typed in another alphabet is spelled in Latin letters first, so Олександр becomes Oleksandr. Word position keeps your word at the start or at the end of every name, and Preserve my word keeps it intact: no shortening, no stretched vowels and no leet inside it, although spaces are still joined, other alphabets are still spelled in Latin and the letter case still follows Letter case or the platform. If the word is too long for the chosen platform, you get the shortest variations, marked as not fitting. What you type stays on your device, because the variations are built in your browser, and a word the filter treats as offensive is refused rather than decorated.

Platform does the format checking for you. Pick one and the names are built to its format rules, meaning the length, the allowed characters and the separators, with a check mark beside each name that passes. A check mark is a format check only: it cannot tell whether the name is free or whether the platform's moderation will accept it. Minecraft Java profile names take up to 16 characters: Latin letters, digits and the underscore. Roblox allows 3 to 20, with at most one underscore and never at the start or the end. The Fortnite preset follows the rules for an Epic Games display name, which allows 3 to 16 characters. Discord usernames are lowercase only. Xbox gamertags stop at 12 characters, and if yours is already taken Xbox adds a number after a # rather than refusing it. Steam, Twitch, Instagram and TikTok have presets too. While a platform is selected, the options it decides for you are locked. To stay on the safe side, the generator also keeps to the narrowest reading of every rule: apart from Steam, only Latin letters and digits, one separator at most, and never at either end.

The best nickname is the one you can say out loud. Before you settle on one, read it to someone: if they cannot spell it back after hearing it once, your teammates will not find you either. Short names travel better than long ones, because every platform has a limit and a name that fits all of them can follow you everywhere. Watch out for letters that look alike, such as l, I and 1 or O and 0, which make a name hard to type from memory; No look-alikes leaves them out altogether, except in a word you typed yourself. Leet (l33t) swaps one or two letters for look-alike digits (a→4, e→3, i→1, o→0, s→5, t→7), never the first one, so the name gains an edge without becoming unreadable; it is a way out when the plain name is taken rather than a default. When your favourite has gone, the old tricks still work: double a letter, add a short prefix or suffix, or try the same idea in another language. Generate a shortlist rather than a single name. The star beside each name adds it to Favourites, which collect names across batches in this browser, and Copy favourites copies them all at once. More like this, the ≈ beside a name, keeps one of its words and replaces the rest, or keeps the first letters of a Random letters name, so a near miss turns into a batch of close variations, and the line beneath the result says which name they came from. From your word has no ≈, because your word already stays in every name. If the choice still drags on, put the finalists into the Random Picker and let it decide.

The same nickname everywhere is a trail. A unique username makes you easy to recognize, which is the point, but it also lets anyone connect your accounts across sites. Researchers at INRIA showed in 2011 that a significant share of profiles on different services can be linked through the username alone, and the rarer the name, the more likely two accounts belong to the same person. Keep one name for the places where you want to be found and another where you do not, and leave out what identifies you offline: your full name, your school, your town and your year of birth. That is why Add digits never produces a four-digit number between 1950 and 2029, which reads as a birth year, or a number code that gets a name reported. Every nickname also passes a filter for offensive words in dozens of languages, including words that only appear where two words meet, and a name that fails is replaced before you see it. A nickname is public, but the password behind it should not be guessable, and the Password Generator makes one that is as hard to guess as your nickname is easy to remember.

Why choose this nickname generator?

The word itself began as a mishearing. Middle English had ekename, an additional name (eke meant also), and an ekename was heard as a nekename, which became nickname. Today most people need several. Gamers want a name for their main account, another for an alt, and a clan name everyone can wear as a prefix. Streamers and video creators need a handle that works as a channel name and fits the length limit of every platform they post on. Discord communities name servers, bots and roles. Writers and artists look for a pen name that does not give their real one away. Teachers running classroom quiz games let pupils pick generated names so nobody plays under their own, and developers fill test accounts with believable usernames instead of test1, test2 and test3. For a colour to go with the name, on an avatar or a channel banner, try the Random Color Generator.

A few honest limits are worth knowing. The generator does not check whether a name is free or whether a platform will approve it: you find out when you register the name or change it in the platform's settings, so it pays to keep two or three favourites ready. A check mark means the name matches the preset's format rules as they were published when last checked; a platform can still turn it down because the name is taken, because its content rules forbid it, or because its format rules have changed since. The filter covers dozens of languages but cannot know every slang word in each of them, so a random name can still mean something unexpected somewhere. A nickname does not make you anonymous either: what you post under it can say more than the name ever will. What the generator does promise is narrower and exact: every name is built in your browser with the Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), matches the format of the platform you chose or is marked when it cannot, passes the filter, and is never sent to our server.

FAQ

How do I generate a nickname?

Choose From words, Random letters or From your word, then press Generate. You get ten nicknames per click by default, each with a copy button beside it, and Count sets anything from 1 to 50. Platform checks the results against the name format of a game or social network and marks the names that pass, and Advanced Options, behind the gear button, set the letter case, the separator, digits, the maximum length and leet.

What is the difference between a nickname and a username?

A username is the name an account is registered under, and it has to be unique on that platform; a nickname is the name people know you by, which may or may not be the same. In games the two usually merge, and Xbox calls it a gamertag. This generator makes short, readable names you can use as either, and with a platform selected it checks them against that platform's name format and marks the ones that pass.

Can the generator check whether a nickname is taken?

No. The generator does not check availability, and it cannot know whether a platform's moderation will accept a name. Check the name when you register it or change it in the platform's settings, and keep two or three favourites ready in case the first one has gone. On Xbox a taken gamertag still works, with a number added after a #.

How do I make a nickname for Minecraft, Roblox or Discord?

Pick the game in Platform. The generator then keeps to its format rules: up to 16 Latin letters, digits and underscores for a Minecraft Java profile name; 3 to 20 characters with at most one underscore for Roblox; lowercase letters, digits, underscores and dots for a Discord username. The options a platform decides are locked while it is selected, and a check mark beside each name shows that it matches the format; whether the name is free, you find out on the platform itself.

How do I make a nickname from my name?

Choose From your word and type your name into Your word or name. The generator pairs it with theme words, adds prefixes such as The or Its and suffixes such as GG or Pro, wraps it as xXAlexXx, stretches a vowel or shortens a long name. Word position puts your name at the start or the end, and Preserve my word stops the generator from shortening, stretching or leeting it. A name in another alphabet is spelled in Latin letters first, so Олександр becomes Oleksandr. The name you type never leaves your browser.

What makes a good nickname?

The best nickname is the one you can say out loud. Keep it short enough to fit every platform you use, easy to spell after hearing it once, and free of look-alike letters such as l, I and 1, which No look-alikes leaves out for you, except in a word you typed yourself. Leave out your full name and your year of birth. Generate a shortlist, read the finalists aloud and pick the one people will remember.

Should I use the same nickname everywhere?

Only where you want to be found. The same nickname everywhere is a trail. Researchers showed in 2011 that a significant share of profiles on different services can be linked through the username alone, and the rarer the name, the stronger the link. Use one name where you want to be recognized and a different one elsewhere.

What are Random letters nicknames?

Made-up words that sound as if they could be real, such as Norte or Rabol, built syllable by syllable to the exact length you set in Length, from 4 to 12 letters. The generator never puts more than two consonants in a row and doubles letters only where the language does, so the names stay pronounceable. On the Cyrillic versions of the page they can also be written in the language's own alphabet.

Why does the generator never suggest some words?

Every nickname passes a filter for offensive words before you see it. It covers dozens of languages, among them English, Spanish, Russian, Hindi, Arabic and Chinese, and also catches words that only appear where two words meet. Digits never form known hate codes, and four digits never fall between 1950 and 2029, where they would read as a year. A name that fails is simply replaced with a new one.

What does leet mean in a nickname?

Leet, or l33t, is the old internet habit of swapping letters for digits that look like them: a→4, e→3, i→1, o→0, s→5, t→7. Here Leet (l33t) swaps one or two letters and never the first, so the name stays readable. It is a good way out when the plain name is taken, and every platform on this page accepts digits.

Can two people get the same nickname?

Yes, it can happen. Within one batch every name is different, but the check for repeats covers only the current batch: earlier batches and names other people generate are not taken into account, and no name is reserved for you. From words with the page defaults can produce more than 300,000 different names, and the line beneath the result shows the count for your current settings, which grows when you add digits. If you like a name, register it before someone else does.

Is anything I type sent to a server?

No. Nicknames are made locally in your browser, and the word you type in From your word is never sent to our server or recorded in its logs. A few things are kept in this browser only: History holds your last 10 batches, Favourites keep the names you star until you clear them, and your settings, including that word, are remembered for the next visit until you reset them. Analytics, if you allow it, records only that the tool was used, never your word or the names.
